Overview

Conical Fermenters make use of the most durable materials, are manufactured into the ideal shapes, and include the best features and accessories. These fermenters on the market mimic that large scale fermentation vessels used by the brewing industry. In short, thousands of years has led to the design, which ultimately increases efficiency and decreases waste. Peep holes, stainless steed stands, trub valves, port valves, pressurizable, built in cooling and heating systems are some of the features you will find.

There are plastic conical fermenters which are described in another section. This page is intended for the professional grade products and is split by manufacturer.

Blichmann Engineering - The Fermenator

Blichmann Engineering's conical fermenter is The Fermenator. All sizes include a 100% stainless steel weld-free interior. It includes 3 piece ball valves for the bottom dump as well as the port. Its rotating racking arm allows for samples to be taken at varying levels. It is sealable and pressurizable for adding cO2 directly to the container.

It has been designed to fit within an upright freezer for cooling. This is in contrast to some of the competition. From their website: "We get regular requests for jacketed or solid-state cooling devised for our line of conicals. While our competitor offers these, they are very expensive and have limited performance. While we would stand to make more money on the sale of these products, we don't feel that it is the best or most economical solution.".

Below are the available sizes. The same set of features are standard regardless of size.

Advantages of Stainless Steel Conical Fermenters

  • Design - Conical fermenters are made for fermenting beer, wine, or other alcholoic beverages, by allowing sediment and trub to collect at the bottom. This is easily removed or salvaged with the use of valves on the bottom of the devices.
  • Materials - The stainless steel conical fermenters are made with materials that are scratch and corrosion resistant, meaning it will last a lifetime.
  • Features - These products are manufactured with the brewer in mind, and provide all of the features needed to ease the process.

Disadvantages of Stainless Steel Conical Fermenters

  • Cost - You pay for what you get, but stainless steel conical fermenters may be one of the most expensive pieces of hardware i nyour brewing collection
  • Size - There is a minimum size for each of the fermenters listed. These may not be ideal when dealing with smaller batches or meads, as it is overkill. The size of the containers will take up space in home brewery wherever that may be.
