Origin and Description
Pacific Sunrise Hops is a high alpha bittering variety that was released in 2000 by the Hop Research Program of the HortResearch Center. Its a triploid hops variety made up of 1/3 Late Cluster, 1/6 Fuggle, 1/6 European Male, and 1/3 New Zealand Male. All hops varieties released from this program after 1970 have been triploids.
Pacific Sunrise has both a strong clean bittering potential as well as favorable aroma character. Pacific Sunrise is not the highest alpha variety from New Zealand, but is near the top with an alpha acid content at 12.5%-14.5% following Pacific Gem. The co-humulone content is low to moderate at 27.0%-30.0%. The myrcene oil content is the only one of the essential oils that stands out at 45.0%-55.0%. This helps give it some woody notes, and oils combined has essence of pine.
