Origin and Description

Southern Promise is a hops variety that took South African hops cultivation to a new level. As a diploid hops variety that descended from Southern Brewer and a Yugoslavian male variety, Southern Promise, along with Outeniqua marked a new variety of hops for the region that could grow in the low daylight hours of the area without the need for artificial light. Until 1992, which marked its release, Southern Brewer was one of the main varieties grown in South Africa, and required artificial lighting to be placed on top of the trellis at intervals to provide additional light for the plants.

Southern Promise Hops is a dual purpose hops with a relatively high alpha acid count at 9.5%-11.5%. It comes with a very low co-humulone content which gives the beer a cleaner, smoother bitterness. Southern Promise also has good aromatic qualities, and is used to add a hoppy bouquet to many different beer styles of including Pilsners, Lagers, and Ales. The oil content shows an elevated humulene oil content, which is known for a woody earthy fragrance.

Southern Promise Hops is largely found in beers from South Africa, including disease and fungus, which is...promising.
